Overview

Driven out of the rugged mountains of eastern Tennessee, armed robbers steal more than Evangeline's winter serenity.

Dylan and Susan St. John have settled comfortably into their life in the Cajun country of South Louisiana and are preparing to have their first child. They have grown to love the serenity and the peace of the bayous and back roads around Evangeline, but their lives are about to take a turn down a different path.

Two men armed with rifles and wearing military garb hold up a local business, the first of a series of robberies in the small towns bordering the Atchafalaya Basin. The teenage daughter of a local judge disappears shortly afterward and is believed to be held hostage by the elusive robbers in their sanctuary deep in the trackless basin. To complicate matters, reports have verified that the violent men also have a child with them.

While the shadowy swamps hide a killer, one man won't rest until justice is served, even at the cost of his own life.

YA-Funderburk captures the powder-keg explosiveness and anguish of a Vietnam vet gone wrong and those powerless to help him. Deserted by his abused wife, Jack Ryder leads his small daughter, Laura Lee, and his younger brother, Caleb, through a binge of robberies and murder. Both Caleb and Laura Lee are swept along by the sheer force of a man whom they love, yet fear. Only Jack seems oblivious to the fact that one day the bloodshed must stop. For Deputy Dylan St. John, investigating the string of crimes is a routine part of his job, until one casualty is an old and precious friend-the one who opened the door to his faith in God. Then the search takes on personal significance. Characters step from the page and remain in readers' hearts long after this book is closed. Propelled along by the arresting plot, this memorable addition to the series promises to be a favorite. Although the characters are predominantly adults, ageless issues provide interest for YAs. Themes running throughout the series include growing up without a father, the value of friendships across cultural and racial lines, and the restoration of a relationship. As the author escorts readers through the dangerous life of a law officer in the deep South, he spices dialogue with Cajun phrases and an unexpected sense of humor.-Janice DeLong, Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA
