Gr 7-9-This collective biography captures highlights from the lives of six women who played vastly different roles in the American Revolution: Abigail Smith Adams, Peggy Shippen Arnold, Esther DeBerdt Reed, Deborah Sampson, Mercy Otis Warren, and Phillis Wheatley. An introduction discusses the general role of women during the Revolution, and the first chapter provides an overview of the events leading up to it. The remaining seven chapters are devoted to the profiles. After recognizing their contributions, Furbee traces the lives of these figures from birth to death, weaving circumstances and achievements into the fabric of their time. There are extensive endnotes as well as black-and-white reproductions throughout. While the chapters lack the depth of individual biographies, they can whet readers' appetites for further reading.-Debbie Feulner, Northwest Middle School, Greensboro, NC Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
