The author details many of the ways that women participated in the American Civil War. He describes the differences between women who stayed on the home front in the North and in the South. Sidebars are used to give biographical information about nurses, camp women, and women who were spies, in the militia or were soldiers. (The sidebar of Clara Barton identifies her as a nurse. Barton had no formal training as a nurse, even though she did provide first aid to the wounded.) One chapter is devoted to the role of African American women, although the roles of Native American women are not discussed. This book is one in the "Women in History" series. 2003, The Gale Group/Lucent Books, Ages 10 to 14.
