This book starts from the recognition that emotional involvement permeates analytic work. Only sustained, intimate engagement with self and other enables us to navigate the dark waters in which, inevitably, tensions surface as knowledge is wrested from transference, countertransference, and resistance in a climate of fear and disowned desire. The balance between the requirements for emotional safety and the dangers inherent in change must be continually assessed and attended to. Drs.
