Overview
Curator of Armed Forces History at the Smithsonian Institution, Hacker, focuses his bibliography on studies of preclassical and indigenous nonwestern military institutions published from 1967 to 1997. He does include sections on Classical antiquity and post-Roman Europe, but does not deal with the periods systematically. Studies of particular battles or wars he cites only to the extent that they illuminate military institutions. He mentions reprintings, paperback editions, and other forms of reproduction that he has run across, but has made no effort to trace them. In a sentence or two he describes, summarizes, or evaluates works he has seen; others he marks and leaves unannotated. Only names are indexed.
