Overview
This survey of the war in the Pacific, told from US and Japanese perspectives, is the second edition of Never Look Back (1991). The revision makes use of new studies added to the historiography of the war over the past decade, many of which deal with subjects once overlooked or treated only peripherally, such as the role of comfort women, the internment of American citizens of Japanese ancestry, the conduct and effects of the US firebombing campaign, eyewitness narratives, and the continuing debate over America's use of atomic bombs and their place in the public memory. Two new chapters deal with the road to war and the war's conclusion. Many of the edition's two dozen b&w photos are unfortunately gray and washed-out.
