Children's Literature -
World War II is underway, and you are there in this new title in the "You Choose Books" series. After a brief introduction setting the scene, readers select one of three main paths: joining the forces fighting the Germans in the Netherlands, signing up for the Canadian military, or serving with the American armed forces. An additional fifty seven choices lead to twenty four different endings. The author does not shirk from the realities of war: Many of the choices lead to "your" demiseβvery often unexpectedly, as in real life. This matter-of-fact, yet, sensitively crafted approach drives home the uncertainties and tragedies citizens and soldiers endured during the war years. The writing is clear and direct, delivering many high-interest period detailsβfor example, this explanation of why U.S. soldiers liked to play poker for chocolate bars: "Army chocolate bars are so hard you have to break them apart with the butt of your gun. You don't mind losing chocolate." The interactive nature of the book is compelling and offers reluctant readers plenty of incentive to persevere. A small quibble is that, after being directed to the appropriate page to continue the thread of the reader's choice, there is no signal that this is indeed the correct page. Able, attentive readers will know immediately, but for others who need additional support, a small header would be helpful. Clear maps and evocative, clearly-captioned photos enhance the text. The final chapter provides an overview of World War II. Back matter includes a timeline, additional points of view to explore, a list of recommended books and websites, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index. Reviewer: Paula K.ZellerBook Details
