Overview
Ezzaher (English, U. of Northern Colorado) explores issues of orientalism, colonialism, and post-coloniality in a range of contexts, stressing the dialogic nature of relations between East and West. She discusses contacts between Greco-Roman cultures and the Near East, focusing on how cultural interaction helps define identity. The colonial era grammars of Eastern languages are analyzed as defining the "Orient" as an object of European power and desire. The different treatments of the agency of the colonized in Conrad's The Heart of Darkness and Achebe's Arrow of God are examined. Finally five recent novels are discussed as they relate to the concept of exile. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, ORBook Details
