Children's Literature
This is a five-week study of the biblical book of Jonah, which is printed in the back in the New American Standard Bible version. The device of newspaper reporting is used for the study of God and Jonah through the text. Max and Molly and their dog, Sam, are reporters. They are assigned one or two memory verses each week, and they are expected to recite them to an adult at the end of the week. The youngsters begin each day with prayer. Along with their reporting, they learn about pronouns, synonyms, and the questions who, what, where, when, why, and how as they gather facts for their story. Each week on day five, they give their newspaper story a title, write it by filling in blanks, and draw a picture in the space provided. Unusual words are explained, and the blanks are filled in all along the way. Cartoons, puzzles, and acting out the story add interest. When the people of Nineveh repent and are forgiven, the parallel of forgiveness in Christ is drawn and acceptance of Christ as Savior is presented as a decision. Puzzle answers and a game board are printed at the back. This series, "Discover 4 Yourself Inductive Bible Studies for Kids," is overseen by curriculum specialist Scoti Domeij. To register completion of the study, a post card is included to send in to receive "something special." This study of the book of Jonah is used as a background for Christian evangelism.
