In what may have been a dissertation for Yale University, Lin looks at one of the Six Great Masters of the Orthodox School of Chinese paining in the early Qing era. Like the others, he says, Wu Li most aligned himself with an artistic tradition deeply rooted in Confucianism and landscape painting, but sought to change his personal life by converting to Christianity, with impacts of his exposure to western religion apparent in his life and work. Ten monochrome reproductions are included. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
