Overview
150 years ago the Xanthian marbles caused a considerable stir on their arrival at the British Museum. This book follows the journey of 'the celebrated classic traveller' Charles Fellows who collected the Lycian marbles from Asia Minor, and looks at the events that led to the dispatch of two expeditions to Xanthia. The volume is illustrated by the many sketches made by Fellows and by his accompnying artist, George Scharf junior, who later became the founding Director of the National Portrait Gallery. Not only an historical study, this is also an unusual travel guide to western Turkey.Book Details
