Overview

XHTML In Easy Steps shows the reader how to create web pages that can be viewed on traditional desktop browsers as well as on small handheld devices. It describes the major features of Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML) and Cascading Stylesheets (CSS). There are code examples of each important aspect of XHTML and browser screenshots that illustrate how that code may appear on a PC web browser and on a modern XHTML-enabled cellphone.
XHTML In Easy Steps begins by examining the evolution of XHTML, then explains the basic structure of a XHTML document. The book describes how to incorporate information about a document within its 'head' section before moving on to demonstrate how to add its actual content. This includes plain text, lists, tables, hyperlinks, submission forms, Java applets, sound, and video.
Many examples are provided showing how Cascading Stylesheets can be used to control the appearance of the document content. The reader need have no previous knowledge of any markup language as each chapter builds the reader's knowledge of XHTML. By the end of this book, the reader will have gained a sound understanding of how XHTML web pages can be created for viewing on traditional and handheld browsers, and will be able to create his or her own XHTML web pages.
XHTML In Easy Steps has an easy-to-follow style that will appeal to anyone who wants to begin writing universal web pages. Save time and money with XHTML In Easy Steps!

XHTML in Easy Steps...is probably the best book on modern mobile markup that I've ever seen....[T]he in Easy Steps layout is simple but functional. There's usually some full page text discussion at the beginning of the chapter, followed by several examples. A typical example page will consist of XHTML and CSS listings followed by (get this) the design as displayed by the Nokia browser as well as what it looks like in a shrunk down IE window....The huge thing for me is the audience that this book is geared for. It's not designed for bleeding edge developers who are eager to learn advanced mobile markup. This is a boook that your mom might pick up if she had the sudden need to learn XHTML. It's going to be the cheapest tech book I'll buy all year. It's absolutely wonderful.β€”Matt Croydon
