Overview

The mighty Yangtze River flows through the heart of China, from its source on the high Tibetan Plateau to its mouth in the East China Sea. For over 2,000 years, the Yangtze has been China's most important transportation route. Twice in China's history, a city on the river has become the country's capital, and the Yangtze has played an important part in the growth of trade and industry. The Yangtze is home to some very rare wildlife -- Chinese dolphins swim in its waters, and giant pandas and snow leopards live beside its banks. The fertile Yangtze basin provides most of the food for China's rapidly growing population, but the river is now suffering from severe pollution. Recently, work began on a major dam across the Yangtze that will flood the famous Three Gorges, one of China's most spectacular landmarks.

Gr 4-7-These excellent resources cover the geography, wildlife, and history of each river and its impact on nearby peoples. The presentation is exceptionally clear and lively and includes explanations of terms necessary to process the information. Some explanations are in the glossaries while others are within the texts. Highlighted sidebars list essential facts and quotations from literary sources and local people bring the rivers to life. Exquisite, full-color photos and maps show the beauty and dangers of the rivers and the ingenuity it took to harness their power and utilize their resources. Conservation efforts and the necessity for planning for future ecological balance are noted. The format adds to both the attractiveness and usefulness of the books. The illustrations are appropriately placed and have informative captions. Even the sidebars have detailed borders. Useful for reports and enjoyable as recreational reading, these titles belong in most collections.-Marlene Gawron, formerly at Orange County Library, Orlando, FL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
