School Library Journal

Gr 4-6Beginning with a forest that has been destroyed by fire, the authors demonstrate how an occurrence that might be seen as an end is simply a rebirth. Organized into eight short chapters, the book takes readers through the process of regrowth from meadow to mature forest. Information about which plants are the first to recolonize the area and why they are suited to that particular stage of growth, along with how animals aid in the forest's recovery, is clearly presented. Although the major focus is on the North American forest, there is a chapter dedicated to the evergreen forests of the northern regions of the U.S. and Canada, and tropical and temperate rain forests. Many clear, full-color photographs accompany the text. Three simple activities round out the presentation. This short, readable book supplies a solid introduction to the life of a North American forest.Michele Snyder, Chappaqua Public Library, NY
