Synopsis

In this update of the 1998 edition, Franco (U. of Illinois College of Medicine; Methodist Heart, Lung, and Vascular Institute, Peoria) and Putnam (U. of Texas; M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston) review advances in the field of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. International contributors to 44 chapters treat diagnostic imaging, gene therapy, and multi-modality management of such conditions as lung cancer, other thoracic malignancies, congenital deformities, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. They also discuss possible solutions to limited organ availability for lung transplants—e.g., living donors, artificial lungs, and organs from other species. Illustrations contained in the text and companion CD-ROM include surgical techniques. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

G. Robert Mason

This text covers a wide variety of topics in thoracic surgery, emphasizing newer techniques and controversial topics. The authors seek to summarize in more detail many of the advances that have been made in thoracic surgery. The intended audience is surgeons who require special expertise in thoracic surgery. I concur. The authors are credible experts, some quite well known in their field. Topics as diverse as lung transplantation, cancer management, gene therapy, and ECMO are covered in 57 chapters, cancer management and transplantation most in depth. There is a CD-ROM included with complete text and illustrations as well as searchable PDF files. The line drawings are good; the imaging studies less so. The index is quite adequate. This is an excellent text for the practicing thoracic surgeon who will find many, if not all, of the chapters of interest and benefit.
