In this textbook, selectively chosen complex cardiac surgical topics are subsequently addressed and discussed by some of the major leaders in the field. These include preoperative management of complex issues, intraoperative and technical issues, as well as management and intraoperative management and postoperative issues. The purpose is to describe some of the more significant advances in the field of cardiac surgery over the past decade, as well as new techniques that are not widely used in the daily practice of this specialty. These are certainly worthy objectives and are very well addressed in this compendium. Though the scope of this book involves everything from basic science to operative techniques, the editors' choice of topics is right on the mark. This book is addressed to the cardiac surgery resident, as well as all practicing cardiothoracic surgeons. The principal editor is well known and very well respected and the contributors are essentially a "who's who" in cardiac surgery. Many of the complex issues of cardiac surgery are addressed in this book. To this end, the scope is somewhat broad. Topics include the more routine issues of blood conservation and mitral valve repair to newer surgical techniques such as ventricular assist device placement, transmyocardial laser revascularization, and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Indeed, relevant nonsurgical topics are also addressed, such as inhaled nitric oxide and advances in immunosuppression. The black-and-white illustrations are simple, but they convey the appropriate information. A CD-ROM is enclosed that includes the entire text. This is an outstanding compendium of important complex cardiac surgical issues thatare often not well discussed in textbooks, if discussed at all. The CD-ROM adds another dimension to this as it allows readers to "carry" the text with them in their laptop computers. This text is truly a worthwhile contribution to this field and will play an important role in my library, as it should in anyone's library who practices cardiothoracic surgery. It fills many of the gaps not addressed by virtually any other textbook in this field.
Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Nader Moazami, MD(Washington University School of Medicine)Description: The second edition of this cardiac surgery book is timely considering the many changes in the field in recent years.
Purpose: The purpose is to delineate the recent advances in the field of cardiac surgery with particular emphasis on the new technological advances. This is of critical importance in defining the direction cardiac surgery will be taking in the next decade. The book clearly meets the objectives and is a welcome addition to the field.
Audience: The book is directed to the general cardiac surgeon. However, many chapters deal with issues that are almost a subspecialty within cardiac surgery. Specifically, the sections dealing with mechanical support systems are only relevant and of interest to cardiac surgeons practicing in institutions that deal with these complex problems. The authors are all experts in their respective fields.
Features: The book appropriately has dedicated a significant portion to the rapidly emerging field of mechanical support devices addressing the new concepts in this field related to nonpulsatile flow devices. In addition, the book has many important chapters on advances in the field of robotic, valve surgery and management of aortic pathology.
Assessment: This is an excellent book that defines the future direction of technological advances in cardiac surgery. In addition, the chapters provide an excellent review of the state of the art for many common problems that the practitioner deals with on a daily basis. The book is concise, relevant, and written by authorities in the field. I highly recommend it to all practicing cardiac surgeons.
