Overview

With the introduction of cardiac surgery more than five decades ago and the use of the heart-lung machine for open heart surgical procedures granting the surgeon unlimited time in which to operate inside the heart, a complex task has been given to the Perfusionist. With a pairing of a perfusionist and a surgeon for each chapter, this book is an essential collection of techniques and prools to aid in decision making in the operating room.

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Vic D. Martychenko Jr., BS CCP(Barnes-Jewish Hospital)
Description: The first half of this book covers perfusion techniques from both a physician's and a perfusionist's perspective while the remainder is devoted to various advanced techniques, policies, and procedures guidelines.
Purpose: The purpose is to "investigate advanced perfusion techniques that are being currently practiced." A compilation of this data is rare and the authors meet their goal.
Audience: This book is useful for both student perfusionists attempting to acquire new skills and experienced perfusionists who want a reference.
Features: One of the most useful sections covers policy and procedure guidelines. Although they are specific to the authors' institution, they can be adapted to any perfusion department's policies and procedures manual with ease. Some of the close-up pictures are well done and useful (p. 489), while others are barely decipherable (pp. 490-494) or blurred and of poor quality (pp. 520-521).
Assessment: The information is useful, but the presentation is poor. The format of the guidelines section varies, making it look as if it was directly cut and pasted from existing documents, and some pictures are of poor quality.
