Reviewer: Benjamin D Kozower, MD(Washington University School of Medicine)Description: This is a tremendous review of the practical care of cardiothoracic surgery patients. It has been 15 years since the first edition and this revision provides a very relevant update of the field.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a practical reference on patient care. The book offers easy access to the wisdom and perspective necessary to digest the complexity of cardiothoracic surgery. The editors accomplish this goal by using a diverse list of authors. The information is easy to reference in the index and the chapters are focused, informative, and appropriately referenced.
Audience: This book is written for all cardiothoracic surgeons. It will help residents preparing for their boards, younger surgeons starting in practice, or more experienced surgeons looking to review a topic or a new area of interest. The authors of the individual chapters are experts in their fields and the editors from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have organized the chapters into a cohesive and relatively thorough book.
Features: This second edition is divided into two major sections, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. Each is organized by organ system and includes a review of pediatric as well as adult pathology. The greatest contribution of this book, as with its parent book, Current Surgical Therapy, is that it offers a focused review of the treatment options for each area. The chapters provide a brief background and generally concentrate on indications for surgery, treatment options, and postoperative management and complications.
Assessment: This second edition has been long overdue. It is a tremendous asset for the practicing surgeon as it helps to synthesize a large body of literature into a practical text. It is different than many other cardiothoracic surgery books in that it focuses on therapeutic and technical concerns. Although the editors accomplish their goals, readers need to understand that this book is not a substitute for standard reading dealing with pathophysiology, presentation of disease, and diagnosis.
