Editorials
Children's Literature -
Quotes from children affected by HIV and short biographies of Magic Johnson and Ryan White put a human face on the problem of HIV/AIDS. The text is frank when discussing sexual activity, "safer sex," homosexuality and injected drug use. There is a section cautioning youngsters to give serious thought to their own decision to become sexually active-an analogy is made to speeding down a hill and crashing, but abstinence is still only mentioned directly once. Most of the material is very timely and accurate. One fairly glaring error is present-twice the text correctly states that 25 percent of babies born to HIV infected mothers will themselves be infected (without preventive therapy), but another paragraph states that 54 percent will display symptoms of AIDS by age seven. A glossary, resource list and index are included in this title which is part of the "Preteen Pressures" series.Book Details
