Al Capsella Takes a Vacation

Gr 8 Up-- Clarke brings Al Capsella, now 16, back for a third wry glimpse of adolescent life in Australia. Al and his friend Lou convince their parents that they can handle a summer/Christmas holiday on their own. Acting on a tip from a classmate, Al persuades his mother to book them a cabin. With visions of beaches, discos, and girls dancing in their heads, the boys make the bus journey to their holiday spot, only to discover that they are miles from surf, parties, or even a restaurant. Rather than admit their mistake, the two contend with snide comments from the locals, inedible meals, and ruined laundry. Although there are laugh-provoking moments reminiscent of Clarke's first two books about Al, the humor is not sustained at the same high level. By removing him from the company of parents and teachers, the author reduces her opportunities for him to reflect upon the adult foibles that provide much high-energy amusement in the earlier novels. The maturing Al has grown a bit reflective, and a new poignancy surfaces in his consideration of the world. Yet even a moderately funny Al Capsella packs a larger humorous punch then most YA novels, and libraries will want to add this account of his latest escapades. --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN
