School Library Journal

Gr 11 Up--For libraries that can't go whole hog and purchase Scribners' 13 volume American Writers (4 base volumes and 9 supplements), this handy 3-volume set will do just fine. It contains a selection of 64 articles from the complete series, 18 of them taken from the recently published American Writers Retrospective Supplement (Scribners, 1997). Written by contemporary scholars, these essays provide fresh looks at some of the most-studied authors (e.g., Willa Cather, T. S. Eliot, Emily Dickinson, William Faulkner, Herman Melville, William Carlos Williams). However, while most of the articles are well written, thorough, and academically sound, many of them are out of date and are sorely in need of revision. The piece on Edward Albee is almost 30 years old and mentions nothing about his career after 1970. All in all though, this set provides a great selection of articles from a standard series that will serve libraries well as a supplement to an incomplete set or as back-up on often-requested literary figures at term-paper time.--Herman Sutter, Saint Pius X High School, Houston, TX
