Overview
Amphetamines and other stimulants are appropriately prescribed for a variety of ailments, but because they can make one feel alert or happy, they are also abused, particularly by teens. The types of stimulants and their effects, the danger abusing them poses, and advice on healing from addiction and resisting peer pressure are clearly presented in this volume.Editorials
School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-This simplified discussion gives a history of stimulants, lists the names of the drugs, describes why people take them and what they do to the body, and provides some suggestions for avoiding peer pressure. The print is large and the book is easy to read, but the information is extremely condensed. There is no clear list of signs or symptoms of abuse, but there is a whole chapter devoted to how amphetamine use affects the family. Full-color and black-and-white photographs illustrate the points made in the text. A list of agencies and phone numbers is included. There is nothing here that is not covered in Julian Chomet's Speed and Amphetamines (Watts, 1990; o.p.) or Scott E. Lukas's Amphetamines (Chelsea, 1991), both of which are much more informative.-Martha Gordon, formerly at South Salem Library, NYBook Details
