Gr 5-7-These volumes offer excellent coverage of U.S. history. Stanley explains and connects events utilizing clear language and a blending of text, images, and primary accounts to provide readers with an overall understanding of the major trends of each period examined. Today's World covers the end of the Vietnam War through the 2004 presidential election. The terms of Presidents Nixon through George W. Bush are highlighted through brief but evenhanded descriptions of the major events of each administration. In World Power, the author provides readers with a view of America's Progressive movement, innovations in aviation and exploration of the North Pole, World War I, and the Roaring Twenties. In European Settlement, Stanley includes the efforts of Columbus to gain the support of the Spanish royals, a lithograph of Columbus and Queen Isabella, and primary-source material containing the permission for exploration. The motivation of other early explorers and their financial supporters is treated in a similar manner. Coverage of Native Americans includes text from the Constitution of the Iroquois Confederation, c. 1500, used by Benjamin Franklin during the creation of the United States Constitution. In New Republic, the series of events that lead to the American Revolution is explained, helping readers to understand the connections of events inherent in historical study. Stanley's analysis of the constitutional debates of the Federalists and Anti-Federalists is exceptionally clear. Well-organized, highly attractive titles.-Rebecca Sheridan, Easttown Library & Information Center, Berwyn, PA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
