Children's Literature

Modern science owes a great deal to the ancient scientists who took a chance at studying nature and changing the way the world was viewed. The eight scientists presented in this text changed the world, paving the way for later scientists to build upon their theories and discoveries. Though many of the theories ancient scientists developed proved to be false, they remained building blocks to later research and served to catapult science forward. Four Greek scientists, two Roman scientists, one Chinese scientist, and one Arabic scientist are given brief introductions in the text, the author providing basic information about their lives and discoveries. The text is a part of the Report Links series "Great Scientists and Famous Inventors." Great Links series provides a website where readers can log in using the code provided with the text and be directed to several websites that offer additional information about the topic under discussion. The links provided from the homepage for this book include much of the same personal information about the scientists profiled, but also include links to general science sites, including the National Institutes of Health and HowStuffWorks websites. School Library Journal

Gr 4-8–These eclectic collective biographies cover eight or nine scientists each. The 10-to-15-page entries include basic personal information but concentrate on career achievements, such as Al-Khwarizmi's documentation of practical uses of algebra (Ancient World Scientists) and George Washington Carver's work on crop rotation (African-American Inventors). An important aspect of each entry is the list of relevant Web sites that can be accessed through the publisher's site and that will be maintained until at least 2014. Overall, this series provides some solid information about well-known and lesser-known individuals important in their fields.
