School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-- Two books that set out to teach the ``how tos'' of safety to young children. Seesawing between levels of reading comprehension and age appropriateness, the texts provide few definitions of vocabulary, and no glossary is included. Project ideas abound, but many of them (especially those using fire) require adult supervision. Other projects rely on readers' ability to follow detailed instructions. Numerous photographs designed to illustrate safety concepts sometimes fail to make their point. There is a plethora of grammatically incorrect sentences. The absence of commas between compound sentences is as rampant as the connection of unrelated thoughts. Books on safety are in increasing demand, but they need to be well prepared. Brown's Dinosaurs, Beware! (Little, 1982), Leaf's Safety Can Be Fun (Lippincott, 1961), and Chlad's safety series (Childrens) introduce and explain safety concepts to children in clear, imaginative formats. --Ellen Dibner, East School, Long Beach, NYBook Details
