Synopsis

Simple text and photographs present the many different things people can do in parks.

Joe AnnHinrichs - Children's Literature

This is an appealing book, featuring all of the fun things there are to do and see at the park. Children will be captivated by the bright and colorful photographs which show children of all ages having fun on their visit to the park. This title serves as a written guide to some of the activities just waiting for a child to do. Boys and girls are pictured playing sports, enjoying nature by watching animals in their natural habitat and by actually touching them in a petting zoo. This text is also a good teaching tool for children who have difficulty reading. Some phrases are repeated multiple times so that a rhythm for the phrase can be established which lends itself to providing confidence to a child. Small sight words from the Dolch word list are the predominate vocabulary used. This gives students an opportunity to practice those words within an entertaining story format. The book provides a story about activities that all children can relate to and enjoy reading about while reinforcing sight words to help them develop their vocabulary. Children and parents from diverse cultures and backgrounds are portrayed in the visit to the park. The happy faces of children and adults in the book should encourage the reader to continue as well. The "Words to Know" section will be helpful for teachers and parents alike to establish a pre-reading start to the story, or as a nice-follow up, if desired. The "Yellow Umbrella Books" are a social studies series that are written to support early readers in an attractive, informative format. It is a great idea that is fun and inviting for the reader. Early-Intervention Level 9. 2004, Yellow Umbrella Books/Capstone Press, . Ages 5 to 7.
