This early reader is an examination of rocks in the most general terms. Young readers learn that rocks are everywhere, all over the earth. They can be found in parks, rivers, lakes, mountains, and beaches—grains of sand. Rocks are changed over time by wind, rain, ice, heat and cold. The author briefly discusses houses made of rock, rock carvings, rock jewelry, chalk to write with and the hard rock of a blackboard. Each page has two or three short sentences and the text is set in a clean and extremely legible typeface. The photographs are colorful and bright, showing many children in the scenes with people representing many different racial groups. The book lists the early-intervention level as 14. The last page is a "Words to Know" section. This book is part of the "Yellow Umbrella Books for Early Readers" series which includes Make it Move, Snakes and Lizards, Everything is Matter, What Computers Do, and Eating Well among others. 2004, Yellow Umbrella Books for Early Readers/ Capstone Press, Ages 3 to 5.
