Overview
This volume deals specifically with the manipulation of atoms by laser light, describing the focusing, channelling and reflection of atoms by laser fields. Different atom optics methods are described, along with the radiation forces involved. Also discussed are the potential fields required to cause the phase change of the wave function necessary for the atomic interactions to occur.Based on the analogues of electron and neutron optics, the realization of atom optics by interaction with matter, magnetic and electrical fields, is becoming increasingly studied for the novel effects it produces. Atoms may be collimated to increase the phase space density and spatial coherence of atomic beams. Cavities may be formed by the reflection of atoms by mirrors of evanescent light, causing the quantization of the motion of atoms occupying them.
