Overview

Super-intense laser pulses produce electric field strength peak values of the order of 1016-1018 W/cm2 in the infrared. The interaction of such fields with an atomic system (atom, molecule, cluster, etc.) gives rise to highly non-linear processes such as the emission of very fast ions or the production of coherent X-radiation. Such processes have important applications in many different fields, such as biology or nuclear fusion.
The latest research in the area is described here, concentrating on: the double ionisation of complex atoms; the ionisation and dissociation dynamics of molecules; the interaction of clusters with very intense, femtosecond laser pulses; the production of very intense, coherent short wavelength radiation; stabilisation and relativistic effects in super-strong fields; Rydberg atoms and strong field coherent control.

Synopsis

The 38 papers report on research into atomic systems exposed to super- intense laser fields, which are generally considered to be those that exceed the atomic binding field. The research is basically engaging either the interaction of complex systems with ultrashort laser pulses or the relativistic effects in super strong fields. The central question regarding multi-electron atoms is the role of the electron-electron correlation in processes involving two electrons, such as strong field direct double ionization. The general themes here are the double ionization of complex atoms, the ionization and dissociation dynamics of molecules, the interaction of clusters with very intense femtosecond laser pulses, and producing such pulses.

Booknews

Proceedings of a workshop held in Han-sur-Lesse, Belgium, in January 1993. Presentations are divided into four sections on generation of high harmonics, dynamics of multiphoton ionization of atoms, dynamics of photoionization and photodissociation of molecules, and interaction of a two-electron system with a strong field. Topics include ionization in strong fields, the time correlation function in floquet theory, molecules in strong laser fields, and stabilization of multielectron atoms. Annotation c.
