From The Critics

Filled with color photographs on glossy, heavy pages, this can be the ideal companion for kids wanting to improve their yo-yo skills. The opening chapter has interesting information on yo-yo personalities and championships. 2000, Sterling Publishing Co., Inc., $9.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: A. Braga SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8

Children's Literature

The yo-yo is the second oldest toy in the world, according to the authors. A history of the yo-yo and how it evolved over the centuries is presented in an interesting manner. Maintenance hints, information on the yo-yo museum in Chico, California and current reigning champions are included. The main emphasis is on learning the different tricks of the yo-yo in beginner, advanced and expert categories. All tricks are presented with color photos of the stages involved in the action. Directions are clear and easy to follow, and the finesse required to use this small toy is apparent. It includes photographs of people from 7 years old to over 50 performing the tricksΒΎevidence that there is something for everyone with the yo-yo. Put one of these books in with a new yo-yo for that special someone's next gift. Maybe they'll be an international champion someday, or just have a fascinating new hobby that fits in their pocket. 2000, Sterling Publishing,

Gr 4 Up-Thirty-five feats of increasing difficulty are illustrated in sharp, step-by-step photographs. Fixed axle and transaxle yo-yos are introduced, as are Imperial, butterfly, modern/modified, and novelty designs. Basic maintenance and string replacement are explained, and a few pages of yo-yo science and history are included. A few masters are mentioned. A more complete listing of related organizations can be found in John Ten Eyck's The Yo-Yo Book (Workman, 1998), but for instruction and range of tricks, this is an excellent choice that illustrates the joys of mastering the yo-yo.-Kathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn, OH Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
