Titles such as the greatest player ever or a legend in his sports are often reserved for players whose careers have ended. Yet, there are someβMichael Jordan, Wayne Gretsky and John Elwayβwho gain those titles during their careers. For Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants baseball team this is particularly true. For many, he will be known for breaking the record for the most homeruns hit in one season, and for much of his career, Barry Bonds has been the complete player. As his father, who also played for San Francisco, Barry was made to play baseball. Raymond H. Miller is able to, in this volume of the "Stars of Sport" series, capture the greatness of Barry Bonds the player. Mr. Miller, however, does not shy away from showing the controversial side of Bonds, including many of the attitudinal and personal issues that have plagued Bonds throughout his career. Numerous photographs help illuminate this athletic career that has spanned 15 years. Miller also shows the reader there is much more to come from this great baseball player. Included in this book is a glossary, index and further reading section. This book is a good addition to any nonfiction collection. 2003, KidHaven Press, Ages 8 to 15.β John D. Orsborn
