Gr 7 Up Three additions to this lengthy series, each of which has many black-and-white illustrations and simple fact-filled biographical narratives. These slim volumes stress the interconnectedness of personal and national history. All are targeted at a U.S. audience. This is particularly clear in Franco , in which the Spanish Civil War is introduced through the eyes of American recruits. Franco is characterized as a cunning brute. Hindenburg receives kinder treatment, although he is blamed for not being able to see beyond his own ``personal myth.'' Disraeli is the most penetrating volume in terms of revealing the personality behind the national figure. Some attempt is made in each book to explain the complex national situations. However, some knowledge of the appropriate period in the history of the country would be helpful. All three titles meet the magic 100-page requirement (barely), and visually inviting covers and pages will make them first choice items for book reports and assignments. They may also spark an interest in the turbulent times described. Steve Matthews, Foxcroft School, Middleburg, Va.
