School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-These series entries feature heavy use of quotes from primary sources, clear writing, comprehensive indexes, relevant bibliographies, and well-chosen black-and-white reproductions. The author is careful to point out in both books that historians have to rely primarily on the information provided by the victors. Readers will find detailed descriptions of battles, strategies, politics, and personalities that defined these events. Roman Imperialism is a theme that dominates both narratives. These titles are worthwhile additions. Unfortunately, there aren't enough maps to help readers identify the many places mentioned in the texts.David N. Pauli, Missoula Public Library, MT
