Best known for the autobiography of her early years, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou has lived a full, creative life. This book, part of the "Signature Lives" series, tells of her trials as a young woman, a young mother and an early activist in the Civil Rights movement. Raised by parents and grandparents in homes from Missouri to California to Arkansas, her story is one of unstable family situations and yet strong family relationships. Angelou is not afraid to work hard to support herself and later her son. Rebounding from prejudice and poor judgment, she nevertheless draws upon her own intelligence and talents to make a difference. Angelou has performed on stage in New York and lived for a time in Africa. She was part of a circle of friends of black activist Malcolm X and had just begun work with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he was assassinated in 1968. Her life is a testament to faith, family, and perseverance. Though she may be better known for her roles on television and as friend to television personality Oprah Winfrey, Angelou's literary work, and life, raise up the common and the oppressed, speaking to the power of the human spirit. This is a rich resource for young adult readers about a contemporary icon in American culture. Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson
