In eight brief chapters, this early reader biography portrays the life of Betsy Ross, an American patriot who lived during the Revolutionary War. From her Quaker childhood in Pennsylvania to her death in 1836, the book presents the facts of Ross' life in text that is clear, uncluttered and an excellent match for its many illustrations. The visuals include maps, photos and drawings with simple and appropriate captions. The book carefully explains the legend that developed around Ross making the first American flag in 1777. The book's glossary defines "legend" as an old story that cannot be proven true. Evidence for the story is based upon one of Ross' grandchildren writing a paper in 1870 that recounted the story. An early chapter identifies Ross as an apprentice at age 12 in an upholstery shop sewing many things beyond upholstery. The book is part of the "First Biographies" series, and will serve the primary grade curriculum well.
