Children's Literature
In seven brief chapters, this early reader biography portrays the life of Davy Crockett, hero of the American frontier. From his boyhood in Tennessee to his death at the Alamo, the book presents the facts of Crockett's life with text that is clear, uncluttered and an excellent match for its many illustrations. The visuals include a map, photos and drawings with simple and appropriate captions. Crockett's exploits as a hunter and Indian fighter provide the book's action. The writing is unbiased, as in, "Sometimes, settlers and the American Indians did not get along. Fights broke out." The defense of the Alamo fort is described as Texans fighting for independence from Mexico. The final chapter identifies the songs, plays, television shows and movies that have been created to honor Crockett who was an American hero even before he died defending the Alamo. The book is part of the "First Biographies" series, and will serve the primary grade curriculum well. The back matter lists important dates that serve to summarize the major events of Crockett's life. 2004, ABDO Publishing Company, Ages 6 to 9.βJacki Vawter, Ph.D.
