Overview

Young people learn by example. They actively look for advice from others who have been in the same shoes. Well, who better to seek advice from than the B.A.B.E.s of the Bible-real women who encountered God in a variety of ways and whose stories are applicable to girls even today? Andrea Stephens, in her fun-loving style, shares the in-depth dish on the life and times of seven Old Testament women who were beautiful, accepted, blessed, and eternally significant in their world. As girls get to know these women, they'll find applicable lessons for their own lives, gain insight into God's character, and be encouraged to write their own story about the kind of woman they want to be. Bible verses, reflection questions, and short prayers make this book is perfect for personal quiet time as well as girls' Bible studies and retreats. About the series: The B.A.B.E. books teach girls that true significance is not about their hips or their hairdos, but about their hearts-hearts that are beautiful, accepted, blessed, and eternally significant.

Children's Literature

The author uses hip teen language to draw relevant lessons from women of the Bible. Referring to Eve, Bathsheba, Esther, and others as "divine divas," she retells the Bible story with explanations in side clips such as "rationalizing: finding ways to make something that's wrong look right" and "punishment: God's judgment of sin under the Old Testament law." At the end of each story are "Didjaknow?" questions and related stories of people today such as Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush, and others less well known. At the end the reader is encouraged to sign a pledge to seek God's plan for her life and send her name to the author through the Baker Publishing Group to receive a B.A.B.E. ID. Spiritual gifts and Christian character traits with Biblical references are listed. A Leader's Guide gives directions for having "chat sessions." The author is beauty editor for "Brio" magazine and founder of "The B.A.B.E. Seminar" series for teen girls. 2005, Fleming H. Revell/Baker Publishing Group, Ages 12 to 18.
