Overview

Teen girls scour popular magazines for the latest fashions, hairdos, and makeup tips. But to be a real B.A.B.E., says Andrea Stephens, you need to look beyond the surface. To be a real Glamour Girl, one needs to look her best, feel her best, and be her best.

Meeting teen girls right where they are, Glamour Girls is a one-of-a-kind resource for everything related to beauty, including hot issues like eating disorders and modesty. Andrea discusses everything from makeup mania and manicure magic to body image, workout routines, and spiritual renewal. Incorporating numerous Q & As from her Le Glamour column in Brio magazine, Andrea gives tips and tricks on beauty to help girls gain confidence and focus their attention on what really matters: their inner beauty and the needs of other people God has placed in their lives.

VOYA - Sherrie Williams

This Christian-based "handbook to real beauty" offers teen girls advice and instruction on fitness, beauty, shopping, personal care, fashion, body image, and more. A B.A.B.E. is a "beautiful, accepted, blessed, and eternally significant" girl. A solid medical background is offered as well as clear instructions for a range of beauty and fitness topics. The layout of the book is visually appealing, with sidebars featuring "glam tips," beauty Q & As, and illustrations of hairstyles and makeup application. There is constant emphasis on maintaining positive self-esteem, a healthy body image and good relationships with God, other teens, and adults. There is a very strong Christian perspective to this book, with scripture quotes sprinkled throughout and the evangelical "plan of salvation" explicitly presented several times. The audience for this book is young adult Christian girls, making the presentation appropriate. The author has been the beauty editor at Brio, a magazine for Christian teen girls, for more than a dozen years, and her expertise is showcased well here. The B.A.B.E. series is supported by an excellent interactive Web site at http://www.andreastephens.com and nationwide seminars, allowing for a ready-made audience for the series. This book is recommended for public libraries and Christian private school libraries, but it might also find an enthusiastic audience in public school students beginning to seek out their own brand of glamour.
