This book in the "Living Well" series explains the importance of being safe on a bicycle, whether alone or in a group, on the street or in a park. It points out specific things one can do to remain safe while cycling. All of the chapters are important and include where to ride safely and best places to ride, dangers, what to wear, and what to check on the bicycle. Vocabulary words like accidents, route, intersections, signals, and reflectors are highlighted for understanding. There are some additional sections in the back about safety information, "helping a friend ride safely and did you know?" There are other library books on the same topic listed in the back. Organizations related to the book topic are listed, for example, the National Safety Council. One could get materials to use with the book. The print format provides spaces between text lines so that it is easy for a beginning-to-read child. This also helps with absorbing the amount of information on each page. The photographs are well chosen and interspersed in the text. There are also appropriate explanations under them. The covers are colorful and attractive to children. This Core Learning Library book provides kids with basic knowledge for a lifetime of learning and safety in their daily lives. 2004, The Child's World, Ages 8 up.

Gr 2-4-Both of these titles discuss the importance of safety in daily life by presenting different situations and explaining how to respond. Bicycle begins with a story about a child wearing a helmet and then goes into rules and regulations for riding. Fire opens with a scenario in which a smoke alarm goes off in a child's bedroom and continues with information about how fires start, how to prevent them, and how to escape. Full-color photos illustrate the texts and add visual interest. Adequate purchases that support core-curriculum standards.-Pamela K.
