Children's Literature -
While the idea for this book is a good one, it fails to deliver. Each two-page spread is intended to give an overview of one specific large-sized, ocean dwelling creature and is accompanied by photos taken on the author's own scuba diving excursions. To begin with, there is a general lack of consistency in the information given on the 11 sea creatures that are described. Sometimes feeding, breeding and species information is given, but sometimes not. Additionally, the information seems to follow no predetermined order, but rather spills out as though the author simply wrote whatever came to his mind and then moved on. Also problematic is the author's use of technical oceanographic terminology. Though some of it is defined in the glossary at the end of the book, it could have just as easily been simplified, and where necessary, explained within the text. As for the photos, without accompanying captions to explain their content, many of them are quite difficult and frustrating to identify.Book Details
