Synopsis

Kids love trucks and diggers, and with the help of full color photographs featuring rugged Caterpillar machines, these budding little contractors will love learning counting, too!

Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

Learn to count with a variety of utility vehicles from the Caterpillar Corporation (and they do have the manufacturer's name prominently displayed). The text opens with "One post-hole digger." And ends with "Ten big trucks and diggers ready to go!" The illustrations are photographs of all of these vehicles. Each scene also has a wide border with yellow diamonds (like the road signs) and they equate to the number that is being presented. It is a good way to reinforce number recognition and recounting the diamonds on each page. There is lots of boy appeal in this board book. 2003, Chronicle, Ages 1 to 4.

School Library Journal

PreS-Photographs of big machines introduce these concepts. In the first book, all of the vehicles are yellow, and other objects demonstrate additional colors: gray rocks, brown dirt, green hard hat, etc. The text appears against a background in the color mentioned. In Counting, text and numbers appear opposite a photograph demonstrating the concept. For example, "one post-hole digger" is set on an orange background, with the numeral 1 in a yellow diamond on one side of the spread, opposite a picture of the action. Children will enjoy counting and re-counting the various trucks and diggers on the pages. The photographs, text, and concepts are all clear and truck books, especially those with realistic illustrations, are always in demand.-Olga R.
