Description:This text provides a set of 200 case-related questions in the format of a Board test. It provides answers which explain both the correct answers as well as why the other answers are incorrect. This is a second edition and similar to others in the "Blueprints" series.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide representative pediatric issues in a format which simulates standard Board questions. It is intended to be a small, portable and easy accessible tool to assist in preparation for Step 2 and Shelf exams for medical students. Students view this as a useful way to help with last minute preparation for testing. Therefore, I believe it meets the author's objectives.
Audience:This book is clearly targeted for medical students studying for Board and Shelf exams in pediatrics. It may be useful for staff physicians when teaching students by providing representative questions following lectures.
Features:The text contains four blocks of 50 questions followed by reasonable explanations of right and wrong answers. The subjects are varied and span all areas of pediatrics. It is easy to read, answer these blocks of questions, and then evaluate the correct and incorrect answers with the explanations given. The book is small and conveniently sized for a lab coat pocket. As with many review texts, there are no references listed.
Assessment:This appears to be a quick source for medical students to review in preparing for Step 2 exams. The sample questions appear to be representative of those seen in Board tests. The second edition was written to provide more current examples of Board questions. It obviously should not serve as the sole source in preparing for these exams.
