Annals of Emergency Medicine

An excellent reference for the practicing emergency physician. I recommend that every ED buy 2 copies -- the second as a spare after the first is "borrowed" and never returns.

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Jadranka Popovic, MD(Children's Mercy Hospital)
Description: This is the first edition of this multiauthored book of pediatric emergency medicine.
Purpose: As stated by the editors, this book was developed as a distillation of the material published in Pediatric Emergency Medicine: A Comprehensive Study Guide, 2nd Edition (McGraw-Hill, 2002). The book is intended to be used as a quick reference, as an overview for the first time user, or as a refresher course for the experienced clinician and to provide the essential information needed in the emergency care of children. For more extensive reviews reader should refer to one of the textbooks in pediatric emergency medicine.
Audience: This book is written for pediatric emergency physicians, general emergency physicians, pediatricians, and others who regularly provide pediatric emergency care or for those who are occasionally involved in the care of sick and injured children. This book provides adequate information for those needing a quick reference for a practical clinical approach, yet it also provides a sufficient amount of data for more comprehensive coverage of the field of pediatric emergency medicine.
Features: The book has 21 major chapters that are further subdivided in 123 sections and provides comprehensive coverage of all common and less common conditions in pediatric emergency medicine. Each section is easy to read and follow and is clear in content. At the end of each section there is a set of related questions that are followed by answers and discussion. The book has an adequate amount of tables, figures, and pictures, although it would have been helpful if the dermatology chapter had some color photographs.
Assessment: "This is the first edition of this excellent book and hopefully will be well received. The writing is first class, clear and to the point. The team effort of the authors provides the pediatric community with a worthwhile contribution to the field. "
