Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Andrew MacPherson, MD(Vancouver Island Health Authority)
Description:This book, written primarily in a bulleted format, outlines the basics of paramedic care. Each chapter starts with a case to place the information into context, but some of the cases are dated. The format may be difficult for some learners and many of the key concepts, such as ECG interpretation, would be better presented with ECG examples than in text format. The summary questions at the end are helpful.
Purpose:The purpose is to review the EMT National Curriculum, but it might be helpful to have this information available in a number of additional formats (such as paragraph, tabular, pictorial). The book meets its objective in an information sense, but the format poorly describes treatment plans and protocols and will not be ideal for all learners.
Audience:This book is written for the text-oriented learner who is looking for important background information. The authors appear to have been teaching to the U.S. Department of Transportation EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum for a number of years, and reference the 1994 document frequently. The book provides good textual information for the anatomy and pathophysiology, but less concise treatment suggestions and algorithms.
Features:The basic anatomy and medical physiology are covered, as is the background for treatment options. An introduction to operational issues in emergency medical services is also provided. Each chapter/system starts with a case to place the information into context, but the questions posed in the scenarios are not directly answered. Illustrations are sparse and conspicuously absent in some areas, such as in the discussion of landmarks for cricothyrotomy. Often the headings are inconsistent, such as in the section on manual airway management.
Assessment:This is an average book, appropriate for EMT-paramedics who need bulleted outlines of anatomy and physiology information, along with a few questions to stimulate recall. It may be helpful as a final long review prior to examinations to remind EMT-paramedics of information they have learned elsewhere.
