Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Andrew MacPherson, MD(Vancouver Island Health Authority)
Description:This book outlines the basics of EMT care using a bulleted point format. Each chapter starts with a case to place the information into context, but the format may be difficult for learners who don't do well with this format. The summary questions at the end are helpful.
Purpose:The book meets the objective of reviewing the EMT National Curriculum, but the format will not be ideal for all learners. It is helpful to have this information available in a number of different formats (such as paragraph, tabular, pictorial, as well as bulleted).
Audience:It is written for the text-oriented basic EMT who is looking for the important information for an EMT-Basic. The authors appear to have been teaching to the U.S. Department of Transportation EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum for a number of years, and reference the 1994 document frequently.
Features:Basic anatomy, medical physiology, and common treatment plans for frequent EMT calls are all covered. The book includes an introduction to operational issues for EMS, as well as a basic introduction to advanced airway skills. Each chapter/system starts with a case to place the information into context, but the questions posed in the scenarios are not directly answered.
Assessment:This is an average textbook, appropriate for basic EMTs who need this information in outline format, along with a few questions to stimulate recall.
