Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: William Miles, MD(Rush University Medical Center)Description: This pocket-sized book contains 200 psychiatry-oriented, clinical-vignette style questions and answers.
Purpose: The purpose is to prepare medical students for the psychiatric component of the USMLE Step 2 Exam. These are certainly worthy objectives, as this is a rapidly-evolving field.
Audience: The book is targeted to medical students studying for the USMLE Step 2 Exam. However, medical students rotating on a psychiatry clerkship, and even interns, may find the questions useful.
Features: The book is divided into four blocks; each block contains USMLE format questions, an answer key, and detailed explanations to the answers. At the end of each block is an answer key and a section offering detailed explanations to the answers. A wide range of psychiatric subjects is covered, including psychodynamic theory, defense mechanisms, and psychopharmacology. There is a glossary of abbreviations in the front, and a helpful index in the back. There are no references or illustrations.
Assessment: This is the second edition of the well-known Blueprint series of USMLE review books. By adding an index and shrinking the dimensions of the book to pocket size, the authors have improved the format over the last edition. There are many USMLE review books available, but Blueprints remains near the top for ease of use, thoroughness, and detailed explanations of answers. Blueprints continues to be a good review source for the USMLE Exam.
