From The Critics

Reviewer: William Miles, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This pocket-sized book contains 200 psychiatry-oriented, clinical-vignette style questions and answers.
Purpose: The purpose is to prepare medical residents for the psychiatric component of the USMLE Step 3 Exam. These are certainly worthy objectives, as this is a rapidly-evolving field.
Audience: The book is targeted to medical residents studying for the USMLE Step 3 Exam. However, psychiatry residents not studying specifically for the exam, or even senior medical students interested in pursuing psychiatry, may find the questions useful.
Features: The book is divided into four blocks; each block contains USMLE format questions, an answer key, and detailed explanations to the answers. Each block deals with a different clinical setting: community-based health center, office setting, inpatient facility, and emergency department. A wide range of psychiatric topics is covered and reviewed. There is a glossary of abbreviations in the front, and a helpful index in the back. No references or illustrations are provided.
Assessment: This is the second edition of the well-known Blueprint series of USMLE review books. By adding an index and shrinking the dimensions of the book to pocket sized, the authors have improved the format over the last edition. The questions are clinically based, thorough in their coverage of psychiatry, and the answers are explained well. Blueprints continues to be a good review source for the USMLE Exam.
