Overview
This, the fourth volume in its series, focuses on fluid balance and its regulation in the fetus and neonate. With a high water content and rapid fluid movements, the fetus and neonate are more susceptible to fluid imbalances than the adult. This volume explains how fluid balance is regulated, by swallowing and by renal and lymphatic function. It then goes on to look at disorders of fluid balance and their pathophysiologies. Finally, the clinical section of the book focuses on management and correction of fetal edema, obstructive uropathies, oligohydramnios, polyhydramnios, and postnatal fluid disorders. This authoritative new publication provides a broad review of fluid balance and renal function from a scientific and clinical perspective.
The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

From The Critics
Reviewer: Ruth A. McDonald, MD(University of Washington School of Medicine)Description: Understanding urologic and renal development, physiology, and pathophysiology is essential for those involved with the care of infants in the perinatal period. This is a well-synthesized, clear presentation of a very complicated topic.
Purpose: The expressed purpose of this book is to present perinatal fluid balance and renal function in a format that provides the breadth of coverage and multiple opinions of a textbook with the critical discussion of current review articles. It is not intended to be all-inclusive, but rather to demonstrate the applications of basic scientific research to clinical medicine by a better understanding of pathophysiology.
Audience: The target audience is broad, from undergraduates learning about physiology to postdoctoral clinicians specializing in obstetrics, neonatology, or pediatrics.
Features: The material is arranged in three sections: physiology, pathophysiology, and clinical applications. The physiology section includes an excellent presentation of renal development and fluid balance. The pathophysiology section covers the impact of fetal growth retardation, congenital renal and urologic abnormalities, as well as hydrops fetalis on fetal development. The final section discusses the correction of fetal obstructive uropathy, poly- and oligohydramnios, and the management of postnatal fluid balance disorders. The information is presented in a straightforward, concise manner. The illustrations and comprehensive tables complement the text and enhance the information presented.
Assessment: This is an excellent teaching tool for medical students and residents. It is especially valuable as an overview of perinatal renal pathophysiology for those receiving subspecialty training in obstetrics, neonatology, pediatric nephrology, and pediatric urology.
