Synopsis

This book will surprise you. You may even be shocked. It shows what can happen when poetry isn't ignored - as it is in many schools. It's the result of a unique educational initiative in North-East England, the response to challenge thrown down by the region's biggest newspaper, the Evening Chronicle in Newcastle. The past four years have seen an astonishing upsurge of interest in poetry in North-East schools. Poems by children aged from 6 to 18 have been read by half a million people in the Chronicle. Several of these young poets have read their work on television and radio. This book is a collection of the best entries from four years of the Evening Chronicle Poetry Competition. It's both a local landmark and a national event. Some of these youngster may well be the poets of the future. Some are already writing for the next generation.
