School Library Journal

Gr 5- 9 Beginning with a brief and undocumented history of break dancing, this book also provides instructions in performing the moves, information on equipment, attire, background sounds (rapping and scratching), dancing teams (crews) and rules and laws regarding this activity. Full-page black-and-white photographs that show teenagers demonstrating the moves or positions are interspersed. Not every break dance technique is explained with accompanying photographs, but explanations are clear and brief. Although a separate chapter discusses how to avoid injuries, precautions are given throughout the sections. Avid break dancers already know the information presented here, so this basic book will enlighten the uninitiated and the timid. Helen E. Williams, University of Maryland, College Park
